Subsequently\, dozens of housekeepers and groundskeepers – including members of our union – with TPS\, were told not to come to work on Thursday\, September 10th by Facilities Management at NC State University following the lack of clarity from the US Government. \nUS Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has an alert on their webpage for El Salvador TPS stating that an announcement will be made “at the appropriate time” but individuals in the US under TPS retain protections and work authorization. An announcement has not yet been made by USCIS. \nWorkers at NC State are paying the price for institutional complicity with the Trump administration’s attacks on immigrants and migrants. Many of these workers had been employed by the university for over twenty years\, providing critical sanitation and maintenance services to keep the university safe and operable for the students and staff\, at low wages that do not support their families. NC State needs to provide resources\, support and clarity to workers impacted by these recent immigration updates. \n“It is unjust that there are thousands of people who have been working for years and could lose their jobs or benefits—people whose immigration status should be regularized\,” stated Monica Castanon\, a housekeeper at NCSU and member of UE Local 150. \nThis is part of the Trump administration’s erratic and unjust immigration enforcement that has now left nearly 200\,000 Salvadorans in limbo with unclear status. Meanwhile\, the government continues to violate immigrant workers basic human rights. Since January 20\, 2025\, there have been at least 41 shootings by immigration agents\, resulting in 11 deaths. The US has illegally repatriated workers to El Salvador in recent months under extremely harsh conditions and in complete violation of civil liberties. \n  \nAccording to UE’s policy statement\, “Immigrants helped build this country and continue to play a central role in our union. Since its inception UE’s aim has been to fight for all worker rights\, regardless of status. Employers and the politicians that represent them seek to exploit divisions between immigrant and native-born workers\, driving down wages and stripping away hard-won workers’ rights.” \nIn this current term\, Trump has taken brazen action brutally attacking immigrant workers with vicious\, high-profile Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids\, along with abductions and detention of international workers. As of September 1\, 2026\, at least 26 people have reportedly died in ICE custody this year. \nThis is part of a renewed McCarthyite threats of internments and deportations of both citizen and non-citizen workers based on their political views\, especially around support for the Palestinian people.
