SUMMARY:Black Women's Labor: A Labor Day Conversation on Care & Economic Justice
DESCRIPTION:Join Oxfam America\, Forward Justice\, and the North Carolina Black Alliance for a community event that will bring lived experience into dialogue with policy. \nA grounded community conversation connecting lived experiences of labor\, caregiving\, and maternal health to economic realities and policy. \nAcross North Carolina\, families are navigating rising costs\, unstable work\, growing caregiving responsibilities\, and persistent inequities in maternal health and access to care. Black women\, in particular\, are often being asked to carry more while receiving less support\, fewer protections\, and fewer pathways to economic stability. \nWe’ll hear directly from Black working women\, caregivers\, workers\, and community members\, while creating space for advocates and policymakers to respond and identify opportunities for meaningful action. \nExpect powerful community stories\, honest conversation\, opportunities to connect with local leaders\, and concrete ways to take action. \nCome for the food and fellowship. Stay for the stories\, solutions\, and a chance to help shape a stronger future for North Carolina families. \nThe event will take place at Lula and Sadie’s (2022 Chapel Hill Rd\, Durham\, NC 27707) on Thursday\, September 3 • 5 PM – 9 PM \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Defending Our Elections: Planning for Public Witness
DESCRIPTION:Following the passage of new anti-immigrant laws\, an escalation by ICE in the Pisgah National Forest and new threats to the sanctity of this fall’s election\, all enabled by white Christian nationalists\, join clergy across the state to learn how to participate in powerful public Christian public witness that centers the Matthew 25 values of “love your neighbor as yourself” and protects the right to select our leaders through elections. \nThe Republican-controlled State Board of Elections has approved a string of party-line rule changes ahead of the midterms\, letting county boards reject reasonable-impediment voter-ID ballots by a simple majority\, toss absentee ballots over envelope “irregularities\,” and remove people from polling places more easily. And the board voted 3–2 to use DHS’s SAVE immigration database to flag and remove suspected noncitizens from the rolls — a system experts warn wrongly flags eligible citizens. We must take action to protect the integrity of our elections\, in part because conservative Christians in our state have advanced a “voter fraud”\, “election integrity” narrative for years\, which has enabled today’s threats to the democratic process. \nThursday\, August 27th • 2PM. \nRegister here.
