SUMMARY:Rocky Mount Event: Workers and Advocates Hold Statewide Heat Events to Urge Adoption of Federal Heat Standards
DESCRIPTION:As the international community prepares to recognize Human Rights Day in the coming week\, a coalition of North Carolina organizations are leveraging the December 10th commemoration to call for basic protections for workers exposed to extreme temperatures on the job. The group is hosting three regional Heat and Human Rights Events on December 8th\, 9th\, and 10th. \nAccording to the North Carolina Department of Labor (NC DOL)\, employers operate under the General Duty Clause which states “Each employer shall furnish to each of his employee’s conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious injury or serious physical harm to his employees.” Labor and health advocates maintain that this clause is insufficient to protect workers. Our group asks to meet with Farley in January to discuss plans to protect workers from heat. \nRead the full press release here. \n  \n\nSpring Hope – (December 8 at noon ) 7840 Old Bailey Hwy\nRaleigh – (December 9 at 4 pm ) 1 E Edenton St\nCharlotte  (December 10 at 4.30 pm ) 206 E Tremont Ave

SUMMARY:Webinar - Follow The Money: Data on Environmental Health & Justice Grantmaking
DESCRIPTION:As you plan your grantmaking for 2025 and develop equity strategies\, do you know where other foundations are investing in Environmental Health & Justice? Are you interested in learning about our ongoing initiative to track grantmaking dollars going to Black\, Indigenous\, or People of Color-led organizations? \nJoin  this “Follow the Money” webinar cosponsored by HEFN and EGA to hear insights on the newest findings on 2022 Environmental Health & Justice funding. \nIn the past few years\, health & justice issues are under the spotlight with the heightened racial justice movements and the unprecedented challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. Through HEFN’s partnership with the Environmental Grantmakers Association (EGA)’s Tracking the Field database\, we recorded a total of $1.45 billion in funding given to environmental health & justice issues in 2022. This marks a 15% increase from 2021\, a notable increase but a lower rate of growth compared to the previous year. \nThis new data highlights What\, Where\, How and Who environmental health & justice funding is going to\, featuring updated demographic data analysis on BIPOC representation within grantee organizations and a new map looking at funding given to grantees based in different states. Over time\, we observed increasing amounts of funding supporting organizations led by Black\, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and women and more resources being directed to underserved communities. However\, the data reveals ongoing disparities and needs that exist in many aspects. \nDuring this webinar\, you will learn about the newest over-time analysis of environmental health & justice funding and funding specifically given to sub-issues like Air Quality\, Drinking Water\, Safer Chemicals & Materials\, Oil and Gas development\, Health & Equitable Economy\, and climate health & justice. You will also learn about the amount of environmental health & justice funding impacting specific groups\, including Children & Young people\, Women\, Low-income Communities\, Workers and Communities of Color. \nThis builds on existing research EGA presented at the HEFN Annual Meeting in October 2024\, and monitors the swift changes happening in the sector. \nPresenters: \n\nAnsje Miller\, Executive Director\, Health and Environmental Funders Network\nAshley Li\, Tracking the Field Research Specialist\, Environmental Grantmakers Association

SUMMARY:Public Hearing on University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill request to burn PFAS-filled pellets
DESCRIPTION:Public Hearing on University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill request to burn PFAS-filled pellets\, Thursday\, January 16\, 2025\, at 6 PM (doors open at 5:30 PM)\, at Chapel Hill Town Hall\, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.\, Chapel Hill \n  \n==== \n\nThe North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality’s (DAQ) upcoming public hearing for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) cogeneration facility will now be held at the Chapel Hill Town Hall. \nIn addition to changing the location of the public hearing\, the start time has also been moved up to 6 p.m. Also\, the comment period has been extended to Jan. 23. \nPublic Hearing on University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\nDate and Time: Thursday\, Jan. 16\, 2025\, at 6 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.)\nLocation: Chapel Hill Town Hall\nAddress: 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.\, Chapel Hill \nIf attendance at the public hearing reaches capacity\, an overflow room will be set up to allow additional members of the public to watch the public hearing remotely. \nUNC’s cogeneration facility\, at 575 W. Cameron Ave. in Chapel Hill\, Orange County\, currently burns coal and natural gas to produce electricity and steam for use at the Chapel Hill campus. The facility is classified as a major source requiring a Title V air quality permit. \nThe university is seeking to modify its permit to allow it to also burn engineered pellets in its boilers. UNC would be allowed to burn a mix of coal\, gas and pellets\, and says it will be evaluating the pellets to determine if they could be a suitable replacement for coal. \nThe pellets are manufactured by the company Covergen and consist of byproducts from packaging and label industries. The pellets are not considered solid waste. The new pellet fuel is expected to reduce emissions of particulate matter and sulfur dioxide while increasing emissions of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide. There would be no physical changes to the boilers. \nBecause the pellets have been shown to contain small amounts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, the draft permit would require UNC to perform regular sampling of the pellets for PFAS and test its boilers to determine actual PFAS emissions. Based on an analysis of the pellets\, the facility would not emit more than 1.2 pounds of PFAS per year. \nDAQ conducted air dispersion modeling for this application\, which demonstrated that the facility’s emissions of toxic air pollutants are expected to comply with all applicable standards and would not cause an exceedance of any acceptable ambient level. The draft permit would require UNC to continue to operate all control devices including filters and injection systems and continuously monitor its emissions of particulate matter\, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. The facility would be subject to recordkeeping and reporting requirements and regular inspections. \nCopies of the public notice\, draft permit\, draft permit review\, permit application\, draft environmental justice report\, and a one-page project fact sheet are available online. \nThe public is encouraged to attend the upcoming hearing and provide comments on the proposed action. Sign-up will be available upon arrival. Oral comments at the hearing should be limited to three minutes or less. Written comments may also be submitted during the hearing. \nComments on the project can also be submitted by email to DAQ.publiccomments@deq.nc.gov with the subject line “UNC.24A” or by leaving a voicemail at 919-707-8448. Comments can also be mailed to: \nNCDEQ Division of Air Quality\n1628 Mail Service Center\nRaleigh\, North Carolina 27699-1628 \nThe public comment period ends on Jan. 23\, 2025. DAQ will consider all public comments before making a final decision on the proposed permit. \nIf you need this information in Spanish or another language\, please call 919-707-8446 or send an email to Shawn.Taylor@deq.nc.gov.

SUMMARY:Health and Healthcare in Your Community (Charlotte): An Active Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:Health and Healthcare in Your Community: An Active Listening Session \nSaturday\, January 25\, 2025 from 2 – 4 pm \nGalilee Ministries\, 3601 Central Ave.\, Charlotte\, NC 28205 \nThe Reimagining America Project invites you to join us for an active listening session where your health and health care experiences in your community are listened to and heard. There will be caring\, trained professionals and great listeners available one-to-one to hear your stories. Your input will help us to better understand the health and health care disparities that exist in too many of our communities. Those disparities are differences in health and health care between groups as a result of social and economic inequities. \nAccording to the CDC\, the health of Black Americans is worse than their white counterparts across many measures of health including infant deaths\, pregnancy-related deaths\, and deaths due to diabetes and cancer. Black people have a shorter life expectancy than white people and the gap only widened during the pandemic. \nWe know the statistics but we want to hear about your valuable lived experiences trying to be healthy and get health care in your community. Please share the attached flyer and participate in this important event!

SUMMARY:Webinar: SPEAKING OF VIOLENCE: Mapping The Terrain
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is the first in a series of webinars titled Towards a People’s Peace – A Global Webinar Series on The Transformative Role of Social Movements in Resisting Violence and Building Peace \nWEBINAR I Speaking of Violence: Mapping the Terrain\nDate: 29 January 2025\nWe introduce the series with a first webinar exploring different categories of collective violence and examining the roots and manifestations of this\, and how these are understood and experienced by social movements. \nSocial justice movements worldwide navigate a complex terrain\, facing multiple forms of violence; from war to oppression\, surveillance to discrimination and beyond. How do people organise and resist in such realities? How can they succeed? \nThis six-part webinar series invites activists\, scholars\, policymakers\, and the public to explore the complex roots\, manifestations and dynamics of violence\, and the transformative role of social movements in acheiving justice and building peace. \nStrategic and sustained non-violent action has proven to be one of the most powerful tools for confronting state and institutional violence and addressing the underlying conditions that fuel conflict and oppression. Understanding the conditions that often lead to violence\, and the many forms in which it manifests can help us to de-escalate and dismantle. \nEach webinar will deliberate on the roots and manifestations of violence\, and the strategic approaches that movements employ to resist and organize. Through the course of these deliberations\, we aim to explore the practical and strategic dimensions of non-violent action\, learn how to support and amplify these efforts\, fostering broader solidarity and systemic transformation towards more just and peaceful societies. \nRead more about other upcoming webinars below! \n\nAbout The Series: \n\n\nThis six-part webinar series invites activists\, scholars\, policymakers\, and the public to explore the complex roots\, manifestations and dynamics of violence\, while also understanding the transformative role of social movements in addressing these\, of building global peace and amplifying justice. \n\n\n\nSocial movements worldwide navigate a complex terrain\, facing multiple forms of violence\, and employing a range of strategies from peaceful protests to armed resistance in order to confront them. SUMMARY:Emergency Community Assembly
DESCRIPTION:“We reject the centering of the university in local organizing\, but the continued harm and outright aggression against the community by UNC cannot be ignored. Bringing in hundreds of police officers into the community on April 30th\, the coal plant which pollutes the air of surrounding black neighborhoods and the university’s plan to switch to PFAS pellets which would fill the air with forever chemicals\, gentrification\, and eager collaboration with ICE – the university continues to endanger our communities with no sign of stopping. The situation demands response. Show up smart.” \n“We are tired of the university harming our communities.\nThe announcement that UNC will cooperate with ICE and hand over its own students represents a willful and callous continued commitment to racist police violence by the university. We invite the community and students to gather in assembly to discuss these developments.\nWe protect us. \nPeace and Justice Plaza\n6pm Saturday\, February 1st\nMask Required \n-No to ICE and UNCPD\n-No to financial support for genocide\, war\, and apartheid\n-No to PFAS pallets and coal\n-No to gentrification and climbing rents”
