SUMMARY:Health and Healthcare in Your Community (Charlotte): An Active Listening Session
DESCRIPTION:Health and Healthcare in Your Community: An Active Listening Session \nSaturday\, January 25\, 2025 from 2 – 4 pm \nGalilee Ministries\, 3601 Central Ave.\, Charlotte\, NC 28205 \nThe Reimagining America Project invites you to join us for an active listening session where your health and health care experiences in your community are listened to and heard. There will be caring\, trained professionals and great listeners available one-to-one to hear your stories. Your input will help us to better understand the health and health care disparities that exist in too many of our communities. Those disparities are differences in health and health care between groups as a result of social and economic inequities. \nAccording to the CDC\, the health of Black Americans is worse than their white counterparts across many measures of health including infant deaths\, pregnancy-related deaths\, and deaths due to diabetes and cancer. Black people have a shorter life expectancy than white people and the gap only widened during the pandemic. \nWe know the statistics but we want to hear about your valuable lived experiences trying to be healthy and get health care in your community. Please share the attached flyer and participate in this important event!

SUMMARY:Webinar: SPEAKING OF VIOLENCE: Mapping The Terrain
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is the first in a series of webinars titled Towards a People’s Peace – A Global Webinar Series on The Transformative Role of Social Movements in Resisting Violence and Building Peace \nWEBINAR I Speaking of Violence: Mapping the Terrain\nDate: 29 January 2025\nWe introduce the series with a first webinar exploring different categories of collective violence and examining the roots and manifestations of this\, and how these are understood and experienced by social movements. \nSocial justice movements worldwide navigate a complex terrain\, facing multiple forms of violence; from war to oppression\, surveillance to discrimination and beyond. How do people organise and resist in such realities? How can they succeed? \nThis six-part webinar series invites activists\, scholars\, policymakers\, and the public to explore the complex roots\, manifestations and dynamics of violence\, and the transformative role of social movements in acheiving justice and building peace. \nStrategic and sustained non-violent action has proven to be one of the most powerful tools for confronting state and institutional violence and addressing the underlying conditions that fuel conflict and oppression. Understanding the conditions that often lead to violence\, and the many forms in which it manifests can help us to de-escalate and dismantle. \nEach webinar will deliberate on the roots and manifestations of violence\, and the strategic approaches that movements employ to resist and organize. Through the course of these deliberations\, we aim to explore the practical and strategic dimensions of non-violent action\, learn how to support and amplify these efforts\, fostering broader solidarity and systemic transformation towards more just and peaceful societies. \nRead more about other upcoming webinars below! \n\nAbout The Series: \n\n\nThis six-part webinar series invites activists\, scholars\, policymakers\, and the public to explore the complex roots\, manifestations and dynamics of violence\, while also understanding the transformative role of social movements in addressing these\, of building global peace and amplifying justice. \n\n\n\nSocial movements worldwide navigate a complex terrain\, facing multiple forms of violence\, and employing a range of strategies from peaceful protests to armed resistance in order to confront them. SUMMARY:Emergency Community Assembly
DESCRIPTION:“We reject the centering of the university in local organizing\, but the continued harm and outright aggression against the community by UNC cannot be ignored. Bringing in hundreds of police officers into the community on April 30th\, the coal plant which pollutes the air of surrounding black neighborhoods and the university’s plan to switch to PFAS pellets which would fill the air with forever chemicals\, gentrification\, and eager collaboration with ICE – the university continues to endanger our communities with no sign of stopping. The situation demands response. Show up smart.” \n“We are tired of the university harming our communities.\nThe announcement that UNC will cooperate with ICE and hand over its own students represents a willful and callous continued commitment to racist police violence by the university. We invite the community and students to gather in assembly to discuss these developments.\nWe protect us. \nPeace and Justice Plaza\n6pm Saturday\, February 1st\nMask Required \n-No to ICE and UNCPD\n-No to financial support for genocide\, war\, and apartheid\n-No to PFAS pallets and coal\n-No to gentrification and climbing rents”

SUMMARY:Talk and Discussion with Davarian Baldwin
DESCRIPTION:“As part our Duke Respect Durham campaign (which Durham Workers\, @ue150union@raiseupthesouth @durhameducators endorsed) to make Duke pay their fair share to support city workers\, schools\, & housing\, we are supporting this event with Davarion Baldwin on Feb 21. Spread the word! @dukerespectdurham” \n  \nFebruary 21st at 5pm\, Duke Respect Durham is hosting a community conversation at SEEDS with Dr. Davarian Baldwin\, author of In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower. Dr. Baldwin studies how universities exert power as major employers and land owners\, holding down wages and worsening housing inequality in communities\, including Durham. He also studies how communities such as ours are organizing to demand universities pay their fair share. Baldwin will lead us in a conversation about how Duke Respect Durham’s fight for a PILOT (payment in lieu of tax) agreement will create a more equitable relationship between Duke and Durham\, and a better future for the Bull City. \nSnacks and refreshments will be provided by People’s Alliance\, and Dr. Baldwin’s book In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower will be available for purchase from The Regulator Bookshop. Childcare\, transportation\, & Spanish interpretation available upon request (subject to availability). RSVP below and bring a friend!\n\nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:Global Day of Action to Close Bases
DESCRIPTION:The thousands of military bases\, both foreign and domestic\, around the world are a critical piece of the war machine that must be dismantled. Closing bases is a necessary step to shift the global security paradigm towards a demilitarized approach that centers common security — no one is safe until all are safe. \n\n\n\n\nWe call on individuals and organizations around the world to join the Global Day of Action to #CloseBases on February 23 by organizing protests at military base sites near you.
