Peter Gilbert has been active in labor, anti-imperialist, and environmental justice struggles for more than twenty-five years. He graduated from Yale University in 2003 where he was active in campus based anti-imperialist organizing.He worked as an organizer on the UFCW campaign to win union representation at the Smithfield Foods pork packing house in Tar Heel, NC from 2005-2006. Peter graduated UNC Law in 2009 with high honors. During law school Peter twice co-chaired the annual Conference on Race, Class, Gender, and Ethnicity. He worked for 4 years as a legal fellow at the UNC Center for Civil Rights with a focus on school desegregation, excluded communities, and environmental racism. Peter authored “The State of Exclusion,” a report on the legacy of housing segregation on political power, school districts, and environmental racism across North Carolina. He has worked at Legal Aid of North Carolina since 2014, founding the Durham Eviction Diversion program in 2017 and then leading the statewide Tenant Eviction Diversion program. He currently works at Legal Aid’s Fair Housing Project with a focus on housing segregation and environmental justice. He also serves on the board of the Southern Vision Alliance.
