Green Drinks: Mushrooms of the Forest: Ecology, Edibility, and Connections

Join Forest Ranger and environmental educator E.J. Dwigans for an engaging, photography-based exploration of the fascinating world of fungi, featuring original mushroom photographs taken at Holmes Educational State Forest and other parts of the state. This presentation introduces the often-overlooked role fungi play in our forest, from forming vital underground partnerships with trees to breaking down organic matter and cycling nutrients through the ecosystem.
E.J. will discuss mushroom ecology and biology, common and notable species of Western North Carolina, and how fungi intersect with human history, cuisine, and culture. Topics will include edibility and toxicity, medicinal uses, and why accurate identification is essential.
Thursday, August 13, 2026 • 5:30PM at The Local Table (1307 7th Ave. East, Hendersonville, NC 28792).
