NCEJN holds Quarterly Meetings (QM) three to four times a year in impacted communities. Community-based organizations host the meeting, and we cover all meeting costs for that impacted community and provide travel support for attendees from other impacted communities. We discuss various environmental justice issues, along with tools of success, strategy, and unity to promote grassroots, community-driven action. 2024 QM 1 – February 18, 2024
Hosted by 7 Directions of Service in Mebane (Alamance County)
Although the Mebane City Council approved the Buc-ee’s development, the fight is far from over! On the weekend of February 17-18th, we met for two days of events: a Water Walk and our first Quarterly Meeting.
- February 17, we joined 7 Directions of Service in a Water Walk to learn more about “some of the fossil fuel expansion projects locally – like the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), MVP Southgate, Moriah LNG Facility, and Buc-ee’s – putting our communities, Mani, and Sacred Places at risk, as well as uplift actions we can take to stop them.” (7DS)
- February 18, we held our first 2024 QM to support 7 Directions of Service in their fight against Buc-ee’s. This meeting brought together people who have had experience in similar fights, who can support this work through their work or specific skills.
- Because of this QM, funds were raised by NCEJN for an 8,000-word investigative report on Buc-ee’s. Look for that report in April 2025!
2024 QM 2 – June 13 and 14, 2024
Hosted by the Lumbee Riverkeeper in Robeson County
- Topic: to raise awareness on the struggles facing Robseon County, with a focus on water quality and the Lumbee Tribe
- On the first day of the QM, participants toured the Museum of Lumbee History and learned about Lumbee culture (see image below). Participants also toured the town, and learned about the harmful impacts of the poultry agricultural industry.
- The second day of the QM included a community-building activity on the Lumber River
2024 QM 3 – September 1, 2024
Hosted by El Futuro es Nuestro in Rocky Mount (Nash County)
- Topic: To bring farmworkers and city workers together to discuss the similarities and challenges in their working conditions, amidst the deaths from heat stress in NC
- This QM was our first event fully accessible in both Spanish and English
- Workers learned about each other challenges, and strengthened the strategy for future collaboration. This QM3 also led to a worker panel at the 25th NCEJN Summit.
